Brian was introduced to music when he began taking piano
lessons at age 5. In his pre-teens years, he started studying
at the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) in Toronto, Ontario. At age 17, he
graduated from the RCM with his ARCT degree in classical
piano performance, and taught piano for 5 years.
Through the RCM, Brian studied courses in harmony, counterpoint,
and analysis, and started developing an interest for writing music.
During high school in the late 80's, he became interested in
electronic keyboards and computer-based music.
Brian began writing computer-based music at this time, and started
to learn about synthesis, sampling and digital audio. By 1993,
Brian had composed numerous pieces of music, which were used in
video games, computer demos, and video segments.
However, in the early 90's, Brian became interested
in other types of music - blues, funk, and especially jazz.
His passion for jazz led him to intense study of jazz theory,
history, and ultimately different jazz piano styles. From this point
forward, Brian concentrated solely on improvised music, something
that was never taught at the RCM.
During his university years, Brian started jamming and performing
with all sorts of musicians and groups spanning many genres - jazz,
blues, funk, rock, world music, and popular styles. Although he
continued to compose, his energy was focused less on computer-aided
composition, and more on live recording, performance, and
song-writing. He continued to study jazz intensely, and
performed in and around the University of Waterloo's campus.
After completing his university degree, Brian settled in Waterloo,
and became been involved in a variety of different band settings, recording projects,
and session work. He became a member of the Society of Composers, Authors,
and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN) in 2003.
Some of the bands Brian lead or played with included:
Filet o' Funk,
The Diplomats,
The Datsun 5, The Datsun Trio,
The Ramessar Quintessence,
The Midnight Club Trio,
and Moebius. Brian is no longer regularly performing with these groups, but luckily
in some cases these bands continue to make music around Kitchener-Waterloo and Toronto.
Besides keyboard instruments, Brian also enjoys playing guitar,
harmonica, and bass, and has been trained on trumpet, trombone, violin, and voice.
